Playing Mantis is the perfect pedal for players who enjoy standing out from the crowd. You will not sound like anyone else because this pedal is special.
The right footswitch activates a natural sounding drive. Via a three-way toggle, the user can select a clean boost, overdrive, or distortion. All three settings have PLENTY of volume on tap to push other pedals or your amp/speakers.
The left footswitch activates the weirdest oscillator we have made to date! The options are insane between the three pots/knobs, four toggles, and expression jack we’ve provided to help the user get weeeeeeird. The expression jack allows you to bypass the Pitch Oscillation pot and sweep the oscillating pitch up and down with an expression pedal of your choice (we suggest a Moog or M-Audio expression pedal; others may have positive or negative effects on the sweep of the Pitch Oscillation). Two pitch toggles allow the user to mess with the pitch to move it much higher or much lower. An LED toggle adds/subtracts an LED in the oscillator to change the grit and shape. The Merge toggle folds the oscillator over and changes the shape a bit resulting in a different grind of oscillation. The volume pot controls the overall volume of the oscillator and the Voltage lets the user sag the voltage going to the oscillator, resulting in weird glitches and pitch changes.
The drive and oscillator circuits can be INDEPENDENTLY activated or bypassed or used together!
The first 50 units of Playing Mantis are exclusively acid etched by Handsome Beard Etching. Please note that due to the process of acid etching, no two enclosures will be exactly the same. There will be etched artifacts randomly on each enclosure and some imaging/text may be more or less crisp in appearance than others. This is part of the charm of acid etching.
After the first 50 units have been sold, all enclosures will be powdercoated and screenprinted by JuxtaPrints.
BABY FURNACE is the mini version touting just the ripping, gated fuzz section of our BLAST FURNACE. The right footswitch turns the pedal on/off. The left footswitch allows the user to switch between whether Volume 1 or Volume 2 is active. When Volume 1 is active, the fuzz signal is wide open with a full frequency blast. When Volume 2 is active, the Tone pot is now active, allowing one to change the tone sweep of the fuzz. The Tone pot moves from angry wasps in an Orange Crush can through drug rug over the cab doom with many, many sweet spots in between. We’ve added a Blend pot so you can add in your clean (dry) signal from your instrument and/or any pedals you place before Baby Furnace (ex – blending an overdrive into the Baby Furnace signal).
M.O.T.H. is a hybrid of a few things. It’s an overdrive…it’s a fuzz…it’s a tremolo…it’s a noise machine oscillator… It does all of the things that people want in a moth. It flutters, zips, and can fly transparently through the air. So, what does all of this mean? An overdrive circuit is set up for low-medium drive. It pushes into a power amp IC which provides a blast of volume. A gain pot provides glitchy, fuzzy tones at counterclockwise and clear, low gain, chimey tones at clockwise. If you start fully clockwise, you’ll hear gain turn to heavier then fuzzy tones as you roll back counterclockwise. The drive responds VERY well to your volume pot on your instrument, cleaning up even more as you roll it back! What would a Fuzzrocious product be without some weirdness?! When the left footswitch is activated, the Hex Schmitt Trigger is activated to add that flutter we mentioned. Use the “H” speed knob to move from a fast tremolo up through pitchy oscillation, all while mixed with your drive signal. For extra fun, turn your instrument’s volume pot off, turn the M.O.T.H.’s Hex on, turn the Gain pot to fully counterclockwise, and experience something extra weird. You can turn the “H” speed knob to control how messed up you want to be.
