BROADCAST – dual footswitch-

We’ve taken the great sound of the Broadcast and added the extra flexibility of foot switchable gain modes and separate level controls – for those who like to switch gain modes on the fly. Finished in battleship grey and with dark red Marconi style knobs.

We have made the gain mode (LOW or HIGH) select-able via the right hand foot switch (the green LED indicates when the pedal is in HIGH gain mode). Each mode its own LEVEL control and in addition, the pedal has two internal trimmers that allow you to fine tune the amount of gain each mode has.

The Broadcast is a transformer coupled, discrete Class-A germanium pre-amplifier based on the classic broadcast consoles of the 1960s. In the low-gain setting, the Broadcast can cover everything from sparkling clean boost through to transparent overdrive, all with a healthy dose of volume available to push your amp. The Broadcast features a specially selected Triad steel-core transformer and a Germanium transistor. Advancing the gain on the Broadcast starts to saturate the transformer and the pedal’s discrete circuitry, giving rise to a gentle and dynamic compression coupled with subtle thickening of the mid-range. With the gain switch in the high setting and the trim control wound up, the Broadcast starts to deliver heavier distorted sounds with a warm and fuzzy edge to them. The Broadcast covers a wide range of driven and distorted tones whilst remaining dynamic, responding well to pick attack and the subtle nuances of every player.

Description

  • Selected Germanium and Silicon transistors
  • Specially chosen TRIAD Magnetics steel-core transformer
  • BI Technologies potentiometers
  • Lumberg jack sockets (rated for >5000 cycles)
  • Heavy duty Alpha foot switches (rated for >30,000 cycles)
  • Individually hand-built on to a high-quality PCB, assembled, hand-wired, tested and packaged all by Michael Hudson

LEFT FOOT SWITCH – Bypasses the pedal (red LED indicates the pedal is active)

RIGHT FOOT SWITCH – Toggles between LOW and HIGH gain modes (green LED indicates HIGH gain mode is selected)

LEVEL LOW – Controls the volume of the pedal in LOW gain mode

LEVEL HIGH – Controls the volume of the pedal in HIGH gain mode

GAIN TRIM – Controls the gain level (both in LOW and HIGH gain modes) of the Broadcast (at higher settings the high-end of the signal is gently rolled off)

LOW CUT – Attenuates the low-end of the Broadcast (since this control lies at the front
end of the Broadcast’s circuitry, it is interactive with the gain controls)

INTERNAL TRIMMERS – Sets the total amount of gain available in each mode.

DC SOCKET – The Broadcast requires a DC power supply unit (PSU) and can run at voltages between 9v and 24v; running the Broadcast at 18v or 24v gives it more headroom, output level and clarity. This is great for use with bass or when using the Broadcast as a clean pre-amp boost.

The Broadcast requires a DC power supply unit (PSU). Please ensure your PSU can supply between 9v and 24v, a minimum current of 20mA and has a 2.1mm negative centre barrel plug. Any other type may damage your pedal. If you plan on sharing the same PSU with other pedals, we recommend using a PSU with isolated outputs, e.g. Voodoo Labs ISO-5 / Pedal Power 2 Plus.

CURRENT DRAW – 20mA

SIDECAR

Our take on the classic 808 circuit with the added versatility of a powerful two-band EQ which draws inspiration from a vintage Studer recording console. Packed with attitude and full of character, the Sidecar can cover classic overdrive and distortion as well as, at extreme settings, fuzz and boost.

The front end of the Sidecar is a modified version of the classic 808 overdrive, tuned for a bigger low-end, wider gain range and greater headroom. At the heart of the clipping section lies a pair of germanium diodes chosen for its ‘softer’ response characteristics, retaining your playing dynamics and feel. The powerful two-band Baxandall equaliser section follows the drive section and provides up to 15dB of cut and boost of the high and low bands, allowing you to sculpt your tone whilst remaining musical at all times.

Description

  • High-Performance, High-Fidelity Audio Operational Amplifier
  • A pair of Germanium diodes
  • Alpha / BI potentiometers
  • Lumberg jack sockets (rated for >5000 cycles)
  • Heavy duty Alpha foot switches (rated for >30,000 cycles)
  • Individually hand-built on to a high-quality PCB, assembled, hand-wired, tested and packaged all by Michael Hudson

DRIVE – Regulates how hard the pedal is driven.

BASS – Adjusts the low end content of the signal, +/- 15 dB at 85 Hz (shelving).

TREBLE – Adjusts the high end content of the signal, +/- 15 dB at 8800 Hz (shelving).

LEVEL – Sets the overall output.

POWER: A standard 9-24 volt DC regulated power supply with a 2.1mm negative tip barrel. Running at higher voltages will give you more headroom, less distortion and less compression and sag. This is perfect for use on bass, baritone and low tuned guitars.

CURRENT DRAW: 50mA

BROADCAST-AP-

I’ve been very excited to collaborate with Ariel Posen to produce the Broadcast-AP. It’s an evolution of the Broadcast, designed to integrate with Ariel’s unique sound. The Broadcast-AP will be available exclusively from Andertons.

At the heart of the Broadcast-AP – as the name may suggest – is the same circuitry as the Broadcast. A class-A discrete, transformer-coupled circuit, designed to saturate in a unique way reminiscent of certain recording and broadcast consoles.

We took the low-gain side of the standard Broadcast as the starting point. Together, Ariel and I exchanged the Germanium transistor for a Silicon and used an OEP transformer – the OEP transformer saturates and distorts less below 100Hz compared to the Triad transformer used in the standard Broadcast. These two changes together give the Broadcast-AP a darker, smoother, more powerful tone compared to the standard version. Greater weight in the lows, whilst retaining the open highs and upper-mids, giving the Broadcast a ‘3D’ effect.

The control layout features both LEVEL and GAIN TRIM potentiometers and a switchable high-pass / low-cut filter – 100Hz @ 6dB/oct. The GAIN TRIM control has 12dB more gain than the low-gain side of standard Broadcast, allowing the Broadcast-AP to cover ground from clean boost through to medium gain overdrive tones. In addition, the gain of the pedal can be increased via an internal trimmer and – when pushed to the max – the sound becomes overloaded, broken and fuzzy. The high-pass / low-cut filter can help keep the low end together, especially when driving amps at higher gain and volume levels.

BC-24V-USA

The BC-24V-USA runs internally at 24 volts from a standard 9 volt supply. The increased voltage gives extra headroom and a tighter low end – fantastic if you are looking for a little less saturation and grit, but without losing that unique sound of the Broadcast. The BC-24V-USA comes finished in turquoise-green and  can only be purchased for a limited time through stockists located in the USA.

The Broadcast is a transformer-coupled, discrete Class-A germanium circuit, that takes its inspiration from classic recording consoles of the 1960s. The unique way in which the circuit saturates and colours your signal can be used to produce biting clean boosts, subtly coloured and thickened signals with a frayed-at-the-edge quality or – when pushed – an individual sounding overdrive with a fuzzy, fried  texture.

The BC-24V-USA also features a three position gain switch offering MID-LOW-HIGH modes. In LOW mode, the pedal has most headroom and stays nearly clean across its range, whilst retaining colouration from its germanium circuit and transformer – perfect if you use higher output pickups, baritone, bass or keyboards . The MID mode is voiced to sound and behave as the regular Broadcast – still pretty clean but adding more grit and saturation to the mix. In HIGH mode, as with the regular Broadcast, the BC-24V-USA heads into overdrive, distortion and fuzz but with a slightly tighter low end.
